Youth Conference in Dumfries

We held our Youth Matters Conference on Friday 24th June, 2011, in the DG1 Centre, Dumfries.   The Conference was directed at young disabled people aged between 12 and 25.   About 100 young disabled people came along, and 300 people filled the conference hall at DG1.

The Conference provided a Voice for young disabled people  in Dumfries and Galloway,  and was very well supported by opinion formers and policy makers from Dumfries and Galloway and across Scotland and the UK.   Present on the day were representatives from Dumfries and Galloway Council,  NHS Dumfries and Galloway, the police, the fire service and a wide spectrum of charities and organisations representing children and young people.

The activities gave the young people opportunities to say what they wanted from life, and this was articulated by Ryan McCann, the keynote speaker, and Tam Baillie,  Scottish Commissioner for children and young people, giving the results of the ‘Big Blether.’  Through workshops and other activities chosen by the young people,  their opinions were heard.

Over the next few weeks DGVoice are preparing a report on the conference, telling what the young people said about their lives, their aspirations, their needs and what it means to live in Dumfries and Galloway as a disabled young person.

This report will go to all opinion formers and policy makers and will feed into various initiatives including the Council’s Youth Policy and Youth Democracy Policy.

The work done at this conference will inform policy and decisions in Dumfries and Galloway for some time to come.  DGVoice know they have helped young disabled people have a VOICE.   What is more everyone had fun and enjoyed their day.
